"Roughnecks" tells the story of the crew of the Osprey Explorer, a North Sea oil rig off the coast of Scotland. It details their lives onboard
the rig, their lives ashore, and their relationships with each other.
Thirteen episodes of the program were aired by the BBC in 1993-1994. This
page will feature an episode gallery for each of the episodes.. Many thanks to Tami and everyone else at the Liam Cunningham Fan Page, which you
can find here. They were kind enough to duplicate the episodes for me in order to make this
page and the caps found here possible. Francesca Hunt plays Hilary Whitesun, a rare woman in a field dominated by men. She joins the crew of the Osprey Explorer and proves herself a worthy addition to their ranks. |

THE CAST |
Chris Brennan is ostensibly the main character. A seasoned veteran, he works on the
drill floor. |
Kevin can sometimes be a bit hot-headed. His short temper sometimes gets him into
trouble. |
Hilary Whitesun is new to the rig. She joins the mud loggers and proves she can do
just as good a job as any man. |
Terry is one of the head men on the Osprey Explorer. He tries to keep the crew in
line as best he can. |
Drew McCallister is an executive who works on shore for the company that runs the rig,
Norsco. A married man, he is having an affair with Tessa. |
Tom is another of the rig's bosses. He is tough, experienced, and has little time
for fools. His daugher Heather is attracted to Chris, much to the dismay
of this protective father. |
Heather is 19, and fresh to college. That does not prevent her from romancing Chris,
a man several years older than her. |
Archie is a kind man, a divorced man who can't quite convince himself that their relationship
is over. He finds solace by taking care of a rabbit that finds its
way on board. |
Davey is one of the tough workers from the drill floor. He is also Kevin's best pal. |
Tessa Buckingham is a gifted mechanic who joins the rig after a death of a crewmember at
the beginning of the series. She is having an affair with Drew, a married
man. |
Cinders is the rig's resident cook, so named as a loving tribute to how his food turns out.
|
Ian is one of the nicest guys in the crew. He's a mechanic, and is constantly concerned
about the equipment aboard. He develops an interest in Hilary. |
Izzy is Tom's wife, and helps run Greenacres, the boarding home where many of the crew
spend their days ashore whilst not working on the rig. |
Ceefax Revell is so named because of wide breadth of knowledge. He's a capable worker
and a friendly fellow. |
Wilf, also known as "Village", is another rookie to the crew. At first rather awkward,
he soon develops into a fine worker. |

The following are scans from the book "Roughnecks" by Tom McGregor (Boxtree Books).
It's "The Official Guide to the BBC Drama Series", covering the first
series. Thanks to Sioux of hywelsimons.co.uk for letting me know of the existence of the book! Sadly, it's out of print
now, but I was able to obtain an "almost new" copy from an amazon.co.uk reseller.
Thanks, Mike! Click on a thumbnail to bring up a larger (and in some cases I really do mean LARGER) version. |
